Music of the Baroque

Today, Wednesday May 5th, we explore the music of the Baroque era. We’ll be including the work of a wide range of composers. Many will be familiar; other perhaps less so; or they may have written pieces that we know well but have no idea of who composed them — for example English composer Thomas Arne, who wrote Rule Britannia but also a range of other pieces which deserve more interest than is usually paid to them.

Then at 12 noon and 4pm Pacific / 8pm or midnight UK time, join us for Episode 6 of “Where’ve You Been?”, our twice-monthly show on places to visit and things to do around the Second Life Grid. In this episode we visit ‘once upon a time’ — a curious world where things appear very different — and you can find the details here. And every four hours from 4am Pacific, tune in for “The Engines of Our Ingenuity”, from the University of Houston, about the machines that make our civilization run and the people whose ingenuity created them.

Music for Beltane

Today we present a programme of a wide variety of music for Beltane.

Beltane or Beltain is the Gaelic May Day festival. Most commonly it is held on 1 May, or about halfway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. In Irish the name for the festival day is Lá Bealtaine, in Scottish Gaelic Là Bealltainn and in Manx Gaelic Laa Boaltinn/Boaldyn. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals — along with Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasadh — and is similar to the Welsh Calan Mai.

And tune in at noon or 4pm Pacific Time / 8pm or midnight in the UK — for the latest edition of our Second Life travel show, Where’ve You Been? — where we visit ‘once upon a time’. Details here. In addition, we are broadcasting Engines of Our Ingenuity from the University of Houston, every four hours from 4am Pacific.

“Where’ve You Been?” Visits ‘once upon a time’

At 12 noon and 4pm Pacific Time on Wednesday and Saturday, tune in for Episode 7 of “Where’ve You Been?” — our twice-monthly series on things to do and places to see on the Second Life Grid, with Caledonia Skytower and Elrik Merlin. In this episode we visit once upon a time by Justice Vought — a place that mixes “The Land of the Giants” with “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” in an experience that encourages exploration and requires an active sense of humor.

Hits In Hi-Fi

Today we’ll take a nostalgic journey back to the 1950s and 1960s, when music was on vinyl (and on the radio) and home audio was new and excitingly futuristic… with Hits In Hi-Fi.

In the early days of stereo, a significant number of albums were released that were designed especially to show off the wonders of this new way of presenting musical entertainment. Sounds “ping-ponged” across the stereo soundstage; instruments appeared hard on one side and then hard on the other… and there were a lot of space references, bloops and bleeps starting and ending the pieces — and once the Moog Synthesiser became available, that was included in the mix too.
