Hits In Hi-Fi

Posted on by

Today — Wednesday 27th October — we’ll take a nostalgic journey back to the 1950s and 1960s and beyond, when music was on vinyl (don’t touch the playing surface!) and home audio was new and excitingly futuristic… with Hits In Hi-Fi.

In the early days of stereo, a significant number of albums were released that were designed especially to show off the wonders of this new way of presenting musical entertainment. Sounds “ping-ponged” across the stereo soundstage; instruments appeared hard on one side and then hard on the other… and there were a lot of space references, bloops and bleeps starting and ending the pieces — and once the Moog Synthesiser became available, that was included in the mix too.Continue reading→

Sounding Brass

Posted on by

Today’s programme — Wednesday 20th October — focuses on brass instruments, with genres that range from Early Music to contemporary pieces. The programme is dedicated to the memory of the late Alan Hawkshaw.

Thus the genres range from ancient and early music, through Baroque and classical, to Victorian brass bands, to ragtime, trad jazz, a touch of big band, right up to modern works including a marvellous suite of pieces for wind band inspired by the works of Shakespeare.

This will all lead to some remarkable juxtapositions — and a few surprises.

In addition, don’t miss the latest installment of “Where’ve You Been?”, which this time visits Snowy River Halloween and Pine Valley Haunted Caverns: Noon and 4pm Pacific, 8pm and midnight UK time, and Engines of Our Ingenuity, every 4 hours from 4am Pacific.Continue reading→

Classics On The Keys

Posted on by

Today, Saturday October 15th, we present a wealth of keyboard pieces — primarily on piano, harpsichord and organ, but you’ll hear some other traditional keyboard instruments too — both solo and with other musical forces backing them.

The main spread of the programme encompasses the Baroque and Classical periods, but you’ll also hear some more modern pieces including treatments of classical pieces, and some engaging little 19th century pieces that are less well-known. Most of the time, there is a classical or baroque link in there somewhere, even if it’s not immediately obvious.Continue reading→
