Jazz On The Keys, feat. Warren Bernhardt
Today, Saturday August 27nd, we’re presenting a programme of keyboards-based Jazz. While many of the pieces we’re playing today feature or include the piano, there are also some recordings featuring other keyboard instruments, including some inspiring pieces on synthesiser.
Today we are celebrating the life and music of jazz pianist Warren Bernhardt, who passed away earlier in the week. We’ll be playing tracks from two of his albums on DMP Records, one of the first digital labels, throughout the day: Warren Bernhardt Trio ’83 (1983) and Hands On (1987). You can read about him here. A multi-talented keyboard player across many genres, he will be sadly missed.
In addition, keep an ear out for Alan Haven’s Image, a late-night Radio Caroline closing tune back in the day; Cambridge-based David Rees-Williams and his trio’s interpretations of classical works; two albums by Billy Barber, one (Shades of Grey) on piano and the other (Lighthouse) on electronic instruments; and some marvellous performances by Ian Lynn including his classic album Forgotten Summer.
Today is the last airing of the current edition of “Where Have You Been?”, where this time, we visit The Nature Collective. Full details here.
And don’t miss “Engines of Our Ingenuity” every four hours from 4am Pacific.

Pirate Radio Day: The History of Offshore Radio
August 14th — today referred to as “Pirate Radio Day” — is remembered as the day, in 1967, when the majority of Britain’s offshore pop pirate radio stations went off the air in the face of the government’s Marine &c Offences Act becoming law at midnight on the 15th. Only Radio Caroline* continued broadcasting.
In memory of the immense changes and benefits the offshore stations brought to music radio and to listeners in search of popular music on the air around the coasts of Britain and Europe, we are commemorating the event today with a special broadcast of a 1970 radio documentary by Paul Harris, “The History of Offshore Radio” . The programme covers the period 1958 to 1970 and includes the earliest Scandinavian stations such as Radio Mercur and Radio Nord, as well as more familiar stations like Radio London, Radio Caroline and Radio Veronica. The period is illustrated by many airchecks from the majority of the stations operating in this period in addition to a commentary which tells the story, from early beginnings, to years of success and sometimes dark deeds. The programme is particularly notable in that it was made in 1970 — soon after the events it depicts occurred,

Tarot @ Teatime Episode 38: The Haughty Swords
Tune in for the latest episode of our original series, “Tarot @ Teatime” as we discuss the suit of Swords.
When Pamela Coleman Smith designed the cards we now know as the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, she was influenced by an early pack, the Sola Busca, that she saw pictures of in the British Museum. This influence is particularly noticeable in the suit of Swords.
However the result of this influence is that the imagery of the Sword cards in RWS and later RWS-derived decks can be found a little misleading to the reader.
In Episode 38 we work through the cards, discussing their imagery and how they may be read in a way that is true to their character, focusing on words and communication.
“Tarot @ Teatime” is broadcast on Thursdays and Sundays at noon and 4pm SLT/Pacific Time, that’s 8pm and midnight UK time.
