The Space Programme: Apollo 11

Space Music and a space documentary.
Wednesday 23rd July 2025: 56 years ago this week, the Apollo 11 spacecraft’s Command Module separated from the Lunar Excursion Module and began its return to Earth after the first human being had stepped out of the LEM and set foot upon the Moon. Today, in a special programme by our sadly passed dear friend Peter Carbines, that we’ve broadcast annually from the start of the station (and beyond), we celebrate the mission’s achievement in music, and in a special music- and actuality-based documentary.

The Shrine Tree

The Shrine Tree by Judith Cullen — Friday, July 11th, 2pm SLT/Pacific Time
Audio realisation by Judith Cullen and Richard Elen
CEH Productions is proud to present The Shrine Tree, a story by Judith Cullen, created as an audio presentation by the author and fellow CEH partner Richard Elen.
Like 2018’s Arrivals & Departures, The Shrine Tree was inspired by one of the stunning virtual environments created by leading artists and designers for the annual Fantasy Faire in the virtual world of Second Life, which raises tens of thousands of dollars every year for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Indeed, the environment for The Shrine Tree was created by the same designers – Sharni Azalee and Marcus Inkpen of The Looking Glass – as created Erstwhile Station, the setting for Arrivals & Departures. And, like the latter, The Shrine Tree was written as part of the annual Fantasy Faire LitFest, where writers are invited to contribute stories and poems inspired by the environments of Fantasy Faire.
The Shrine Tree tells of a man who has earned a unique reputation as a problem-solver – a “fixer” – thanks to his ability to remain emotionally detached from the problems he is working on. He can see through the emotions that cloud peoples’ judgement to find a solution, thanks to that legendary detachment. He believes he has left the complications of the emotional realm behind him… but under the spell of an increasingly miraculous place, it becomes evident that this may not, in fact, be the case.
The Shrine Tree is read by Judith Cullen and Richard Elen, and was recorded and produced by Richard Elen. The episode includes music by Gabriel Fauré, arranged by Ben Parry and Benedict Madden, courtesy of Audio Network.
Where Have You Been? — S05E04: Sugarfish Artist’s Village

The latest episode of “Where Have You Been?”, our regular feature on things to do and places to visit across the Second Life grid, features Sugarfish Artist’s Village, which offers individual spaces for Second Life artists to display their work, as well as a flexible central exhibition space. In addition to the opportunities for art, the area includes games; a beach and all that comes with fishing, rock climbing, and a cafe. There’s a generous party deck and several locations suitable for dancing. Visitors are invited to pour a glass of wine and gather ‘round the fire on the dock with friends.
There is an art walk through the village, with four images on display per featured artist; and there are artists studios for rent in the form of shipping containers that have been raised off the sand and provided with their own decks.
The programme airs on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12 noon and 4pm Second Life/Pacific Time on July 9, 12, 16, 19 and 23.

First Sunday — July 6th, 2pm

First Sundays: Sunday July 6th at 2pm SLT/Pacific Time – American Tone Poems
Orchestral music has a long tradition of works that illustrate or evoke the content of a poem, short story, novel, painting, landscape, or other (non-musical) source known as tone poems, symphonic poems, or programme music. In the 20th Century, notable American composers and arrangers celebrated their country without stars, banner-waving, or red-white-n-blue; but through symphonic poems that celebrate the people and scenic locales that bring richness and variety to their North American home.
You might not be able to dance to them, but these soaring works can fill your soul. Composers featured include Aaron Copland, Ferde Grofe, and George Gershwin. DJ Caledonia Skytower, presents, live from the VCRadio studio at SL22B — on Sunday July 6th at 2pm SLT/Pacific Time.
At Virtual Community Radio, we believe Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to treat yourself to something special. That’s why we invite you to join us at 2pm SLT on the First Sunday afternoon of each month as we present a different musical treat: one hour of music on a theme. It could be anything from new age music, orchestral classics, soundtracks, or music celebrating a particular culture.
Arrivals & Departures — Original Radio Version

Arrivals & Departures: A Tale of Two Journeys — Friday, July 4th, 2pm SLT/Pacific
ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES — RADIO VERSION is a radio adaptation of a short story written by Caledonia Skytower, originally recorded for Fantasy Faire Radio as part of the 10th Fantasy Faire, the annual SL-based fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.
The story was inspired by a superbly-imagined Steampunk-inspired spaceport created by leading virtual world creators The Looking Glass – Sharni Azalee and Marcus Inkpen – for Fantasy Faire 2018, which was used for the later machinima version, which is available on the CEH Productions web site.
