The Light Programme

Saturday May 28th, and today we make a foray into the world of Light Music, one of our staple genres here on VCRadio.

We can think of Light Music as filling a gap between out-and-out classical music, and the exceptional quality music production library and film music of the 1940s-50s — the latter also featuring from time to time on The Light Programme. It’s a continuum with perhaps Sullivan at one end, and maybe Coates at the other – though it’s difficult to define boundaries. In between are composers like Addinsell, Alwyn, Ketelbey, Tomlinson, Binge, Lane and others, and it’s their music that we’ll be featuring today. What these pieces and composers have in common, is a “classical” approach to melodic music. Their work is full of great tunes, and it utilises orchestral forces with as much aplomb as any classical composer. But in general (though not always), the music is a little lighter in tone and feel.

Tarot @ Teatime — Episode 33: The Occult Tarot

As far as we know, Tarot cards were not used for divination until the late 18th century. French occultists drew together the threads of secret knowledge that formed the Western Mystery Tradition. We look at that tradition and examine how occultists in France and Britain linked it to the Tarot, forever changing the appearance of the cards and the ways in which they are read.

Episode 33 premieres on Thursday May 26th at 12 noon and 4pm /SLT Pacific Time (8pm and midnight in the UK) and is repeated at the same times on Sundays and Thursdays up to and including June 5th.

Water Music

Today’s Featured Music theme is ‘Water’ and the selections are extraordinarily diverse, from traditional and modern songs of the sea, of ships, and of those who sail in them; to pieces written to evoke rivers and lakes; to items where the water is only imaginary, such as a series of compositions about a voyage to the Moon in a sailing ship, and Karl Jenkins’s Imagined Oceans. The styles are equally eclectic, ranging from folk to light to classical and New Age music, and there’s even a bit of contemporary popular material.

New Shows on Mixcloud

We’ve uploaded three more programmes to our “Listen Again” facility on Mixcloud: Tarot @ Teatime Episode 32, on the Tarot de Marseille; Where Have You Been? Series 2, Episode 10: May The Art Be With You, and the second in our new series on the Musical Theatre: The Magic Of The Musical: Showboat.

THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF JACK FLANDERS

In the dead of night, a large shipping crate is delivered to the home of our hero Jack Flanders. Opening the crate, Jack discovers a green velvet overstuffed chair. Each night at the stroke of midnight, Jack sits in the soft, comfortable chair which comes alive, luring him onto its velvety realm. Everyday reality fades away, and Jack finds himself in a strange, other-world of magic, pirates, and sorcery where huge puffballs cling to ceilings and walls, masted sailing ships with wings fly the skies and islands float in the air…
