Saturday At The Movies

Today, join us for a pro­gramme of music from the movies, today fea­tur­ing the music of Christo­pher Gun­ning, who sad­ly passed away recent­ly. Best known for his music for Agatha Christie’s Poirot, he was a pro­lif­ic com­pos­er who wrote a dozen sym­phonies as well as numer­ous film and TV sound­tracks. Movies are where most peo­ple hear orches­tral music these days, and there will be plen­ty of that in this pro­gramme. But movie music is a much broad­er field than that, and today you’ll hear music from the movies of many dif­fer­ent kinds, from the very start of the genre (with Camille Saint-Saens) to the lat­est block­busters; from orches­tral music to rock, to Fifties songs. There is a slight bias towards fan­ta­sy and SF movies, but nev­er mind, we all need a bit of an escape these days.…

We used to play the same episode of “Engines” through­out the day, but now, if you’re lucky, you can catch as many as three.

Woodwinds

Today’s pro­gramme fea­tures mem­bers of the wood­wind fam­i­ly — oboe, clar­inet, flute, bas­soon, recorder and more, includ­ing the gamut of Ear­ly Music wood­winds like the shawn (the pre­de­ces­sor of the oboe), cur­tal (a pro­­to-bas­­soon) and crumhorn.

Of course, the major­i­ty of orches­tral music includes a wood­wind sec­tion, so the cri­te­ri­on for inclu­sion in today’s show was that a mem­ber of the wood­wind fam­i­ly is the lead instru­ment — a “wind band” is not suf­fi­cient (and they’re gen­er­al­ly usu­al­ly brass-heavy any­way), but a con­cer­to for bas­soon (yes there is at least one) counts.Con­tin­ue read­ing→

Music from the Grand Hotel

“And now we take you to the Palm Court of the Grand Hotel…” as the announc­er used to say, intro­duc­ing a pro­gramme of fine light clas­si­cal and dance music from the Grand Hotel in East­bourne, on Britain’s South Coast.

Today we take you back to the dance-halls of the ear­ly to mid­dle 20th Cen­tu­ry, from around the mid-20s to the 50s, char­ac­terised by the BBC radio series, Grand Hotel. We’ll also be hear­ing some clas­sic big-band record­ings and much more.

Where Have You Been? — A New Season

We’re pleased to announce the start of the third series of our orig­i­nal pro­gramme, “Where Have You Been?”, where we dis­cuss places to vis­it and things to do around the Sec­ond Life grid — and we try to ensure they’re usu­al­ly things and places that the major com­men­ta­tors miss.

“WYB” airs every Wednes­day and Sat­ur­day at 12 noon and 4pm Pacif­ic / SLT, and each episode is broad­cast over a cou­ple of weeks. And don’t miss “Engines of Our Inge­nu­ity” from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Hous­ton, every four hours from 4am Pacif­ic.

Our des­ti­na­tions gen­er­al­ly fall into one of three cat­e­gories: Art, Explo­ration and Events. In the first episode of the new sea­son, it’s the first of those, as we take a trip over to GBTH, aka “Grab By The Horns”  — a vir­tu­al visu­al arts incu­ba­tor in Sec­ond Life, found­ed in Octo­ber 2017 by Mari­na Mün­ter.
