The Magic of The Musical: New Series from Angel Manor

MUSICAL THEATER FANS:  New Series begins April 15 at 2pm SLT!

Season 2 of Virtual Community Radio’s original series “The Magic of The Musical” starts this Saturday, April 15th, at 2pm SLT/Pacific Time, live from its new home in the Gold Hall at the elegant Angel Manor Estate.

Music of the Baroque

Wednesday April 12th, and today we’re featuring music of the Baroque era, with a particularly extensive collection of music by J S Bach.

Plus it’s your last chance to hear the current episode of “Where Have You Been?”, where we report on interesting things to see and do across the Second Life Grid, at noon and 4pm Pacific/SLT, where we visit Armstrong Park in a virtual New Orleans; and don’t miss “Engines of Our Ingenuity” from the University of Houston, every four hours from 4am Pacific.

Tired of the Green Menace? — A Ruby Adventure from ZBS

On Sunday April 9th at 11:30 am Pacific/SLT, we are pleased to be hosting a special event at the Sci-Fi Con in Second Life; a “ZBS Radio Hour” from our friends at ZBS Foundation, featuring the very first adventure of Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe, ZBS’s most popular creation, in: “Tired of the Green Menace?” The location will be the auditorium at New Atlantis 95/128/25

The programme will also be broadcast on our Events channel at http://streams.vcradio.org:8090/stream.

Saturday At The Movies

Today, join us for a programme of music from the movies, today featuring the music of Christopher Gunning, who sadly passed away recently. Best known for his music for Agatha Christie’s Poirot, he was a prolific composer who wrote a dozen symphonies as well as numerous film and TV soundtracks. For more on his life and work, visit his web site.

Movies are where most people hear orchestral music these days, and there will be plenty of that in this programme. But movie music is a much broader field than that, and today you’ll hear music from the movies of many different kinds, from the very start of the genre (with Camille Saint-Saens) to the latest blockbusters; from orchestral music to rock, to Fifties songs. There is a slight bias towards fantasy and SF movies, but never mind, we all need a bit of an escape these days.…

Armstrong Park

Wednesday, March 29th, and today our Featured Music is Vocal Magic — pieces from several genres exploring the musical capabilities of the human voice.

Then we have for you the latest episode of our original series, “Where Have You Been?”, where we suggest things to do and places to visit around the Second Life Grid. This time,  we visit Armstrong Park, a Second Life depiction of the park in New Orleans that celebrates jazz musician Louis Armstrong.  Tune in at 12 noon or 4pm Pacific/SLT. Plus “Engines of Our Ingenuity” from the University of Houston every four hours from 4am Pacific. We used to play the same episode of “Engines” throughout the day, but now, if you’re lucky, you can catch as many as three.

Easy to Remember: The Great American Songwriters And Their Songs

Today we are featuring music from the “Great American Songbook” — with music by writers including Gershwin, Arlen, Berlin, Kern, Carmichael, Porter and many more, in a programme inspired by William Zinsser’s book on the music of the mid-20th Century, Easy To Remember.

Le Monde Perdu — Luane’s World

Wednesday, March 22nd, and today our Featured Music is Smooth Jazz — primarily instrumental pieces from the jazzier end of the New Age spectrum.

Then in the latest episode of our original series, “Where Have You Been?”, where we suggest things to do and places to see around the Second Life Grid, we visit Le Monde Perdu — Luane’s World — where Spring is in the air!  Tune in at 12 noon or 4pm Pacific/SLT.

The estate contains seven regions. Le Monde Perdu is the main region and you can explore both the romantic ground level seasonal environment, or the magical world in the sky.

Music of Ireland

Yesterday was March 17, St Patrick’s Day, and in recognition of that, today we have a programme of primarily (but not exclusively) traditional music for you from the Emerald Isle.

You can also catch the latest edition of Where Have You Been? — our regular feature on things to do and places to see around the Second Life Grid. Tune in at 12 noon and 4pm Pacific Time — this week, that’s 19:00 and 23:00 UTC. And this time we visit Le Monde Perdu — Luane’s World. For details, see the article here. You can also catch Engines of Our Ingenuity, from the University of Houston, every four hours from 4am Pacific.

Woodwinds

Today’s programme features members of the woodwind family — oboe, clarinet, flute, bassoon, recorder and more, including the gamut of Early Music woodwinds like the shawn (the predecessor of the oboe), curtal (a proto-bassoon) and crumhorn.

Of course, the majority of orchestral music includes a woodwind section, so the criterion for inclusion in today’s show was that a member of the woodwind family is the lead instrument — a “wind band” is not sufficient (and they’re generally usually brass-heavy anyway), but a concerto for bassoon (yes there is at least one) counts.

Le Monde Perdu — Luane’s World

In the latest episode of our original series, “Where Have You Been?”, where we suggest things to do and places to see around the Second Life Grid, we visit Le Monde Perdu — Luane’s World — where Spring is in the air!
