The Glinka Gallery — Featuring artist Lash VV

June is Pride Month in the United States and many other countries, and that’s just one of the reasons that we’re featuring Wolfgang Glinka’s Glinka Gallery in this edition of “Where Have You Been?”.

For those who might not know, Pride Month started in 1969 in the United States as a response to the Stonewall riots, which served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. The observance has grown and expanded over the years, and Pride Month celebrates LGBTQIA+ culture as well as working to build rights awareness.

The Glinka Gallery holds regular exhibitions and performances  on  the gallery’s five floors, featuring fine art, sculpture, photography, poetry, music and dance.

Music from the Time of Austen & Gainsborough

Today’s programme takes us back to the the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, with music from the time of novelist Jane Austen (1775–1817) and the painter (Thomas) Gainsborough (1728–1788) — in other words, music that takes us from the late Baroque to the early Classical period.

Smooth Jazz

Today, Saturday  27th May, we are featuring a collection of Smooth Jazz pieces to relax with and enjoy.

The majority of pieces are instrumental and in general the music is on the Jazz end of the New Age spectrum.

Season 2 of Virtual Community Radio’s original series “The Magic of The Musical” continues this Saturday, May 20th, at 2pm SLT/Pacific Time, live from its home in the Gold Hall at the elegant Angel Manor Estate.

Where Have You Been?: Calas Relay Honor Garden

This time on our original Second Life travelogue series, “Where Have You Been?”, we look at the collaboration of Calas Galadhon and The Grove in aid of Relay for Life of Second Life.

Calas Galadhon and The Grove are presenting a very special joint build in support of Relay For Life’s Relay Weekend — which recognises the season of fundraising with a 36-region track where people can walk and experience special campsites built in support of the search for a cure to cancer.

Two of the 36 regions are designated as “Designer Regions” and Calas Galadhon and The Grove have been asked to work on a collaboration for a special build.

The region is designed to be an inner reflective experience and also features the Calas Relay Honor Garden, and the creators invite residents to contribute photos of people in thoer lives who have been affected by cancer, and who they would like to honor.

The programme will air on Virtual Community Radio on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12 noon and 4pm SLT/Pacific Time up to and including June 3rd.

Classic Electronica

Today we are leaving our traditional genres for a while with a programme of music produced with the aid of electronic devices, stretching right back to the early days of the genre, with tape manipulation and “found sounds” and the use of digital to analogue converters attached directly to mainframe computers, as in the landmark album “Music From Mathematics”.

We take a listen to early uses of the Moog and other synthesisers and albums that mixed musique concrete with synths for a light-hearted melodic sound — from the likes of Perrey & Kingsley.

Moving forward you’ll hear classic albums like “Switched-On Bach” and other recordings by pioneer synthesist Wendy Carlos, and other quite different classic albums from the “Berlin School” of synthesiser music.

You’ll hear Tonto’s Expanding Head Band. Jean-Michel Jarre. Jean-Phillippe Rykiel. Tangerine Dream. Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan. Tomita. And many more. All in all, plenty to get your teeth into.

Then don’t miss another chance to hear the latest episode of our Second Life travelogue, “Where’ve You Been?”, where we look at cool places to visit and things to do around the Second Life grid. This time we visit a gallery — The Edge Gallery — that features monochrome imagery. You can find more details here. 12 noon or 4pm Pacific / 8pm or midnight in the UK.

The Edge Gallery — in black & white

Kultivate Magazine is a publication about the cultural aspects of Second Life — and a lot more! Its goal is to support art, culture, photography, music, and fashion.

Kultivate’s endeavours in Second Life include the magazine (of course) but their grid presence is significant, incorporating, among other things, a number of galleries including The Edge Gallery of Black & White Imagery, which is the subject of this programme.

The Edge Gallery specifically features black and white imagery and art. We take a more detailed look at the current exhibit, which just opened, showing a variety of artists with unique approaches to monochrome 2‑D imagery.

Tarot @ Teatime, Episode 17: Tarot History

Welcome to Episode 17 in our popular original series, “Tarot @ Tea Time”. This will be broadcast on April 30, and May 4, 7 and 11, at 12 noon and 4pm Pacific/SLT.

In Episode 17, Honey and Willow explore the fascinating 600 year history of the Tarot. They discuss significant places, people, and dates, as well as when occult systems such as astrology, Kabbalah, Egyptian mythology, and alchemy came to be associated with Tarot.

Did you miss The Addams Family?

The Magic of The Musical is our monthly series, hosted by Caledonia Skytower with special guests, which looks at the music of musical theater, and the lore and histories behind the shows.  It’s presented on Virtual Community Radio from the Gold Hall at Angel Manor in Second Life before a live audience at 2pm SLT/Pacific Time, on the third Saturday in the month.

And after the show has aired, we post it on our “Listen Again” service at Mixcloud, so you can catch any shows you missed, or to hear them again.

But there was one episode, that went out in October last year — our Hallowe’en edition — that we couldn’t put on Mixcloud for technical reasons. We’re pleased to say that the problem is now fixed, and you can listen to the missing episode at any time on MixCloud!

The episode is “Everything Addams”, which not only looked at the musical “The Addams Family” but also the family’s other, er, reincarnations. In this episode, host Caledonia Skytower was joined by Guest Kayden Oconnell – actor, musician, and supporter of the arts in both First and Second Lives – who played Uncle Fester in a local production  of the stage musical. The episode is already in Mixcloud’s global Musicals and global Soundtracks charts — so don’t miss this opportunity to catch it!
