Where Have You Been? S05E03 — Linden Lab Trust & Security Initiative

Something important was released from Linden Lab in the last weeks of May, and it is something that we at VCRadio feel strongly about, and these last weeks of June leading up to, and including, the opening of SL22B are a perfect time to highlight this. After all, it does not matter how interesting a destination is if you don’t exercise best practices in cyber safety, anywhere on the grid is potentially a threat.

We are referring to the SecondLife.com blog entry from May 23rd entitled “Your Account, Your World, Keep it Safe.” VCRadio was invited to a meeting with The Lab along with other vloggers, bloggers, and Sl Influencers where Linden Lab Executive Chairman Brad Oberwager explained the circumstances leading up to this new initiative and encouraged that the word be spread to the resident community — cyber security is important, critically so, and if residents engage in a few best practices, they can help contravene the efforts of people with ill intent, or as Oberwager called them “bad actors.”

We felt so strongly about it that we created a Public Service Announcement which now runs regularly on VCRadio. Second Life is a community: its strength and security is a responsibility that we all share. Linden Lab has recently expanded their Trust & Safety team, dedicated to protecting your accounts and investigating abuse more quickly and thoroughly than ever before. Yet it’s important for residents to do their part and use good judgement, and maybe even a bit of caution in order to keep themselves, their Linden Dollars, and their personal information secure.

This episode of WYB discusses online and in-world safety and security, including hints and tips to help you stay secure. We cover such topics as passwords, multi-factor authorization (MFA), keeping login details to yourself, and where it’s safe to buy or sell L$ — and more.

This show will air at noon and 4pm SLT/Pacific, on June 14, 18, 21, 25, 28, and July 2.

And as promised in the show, here are some useful links covering online security and related topics.

This Month:  The Best of the Big Apple

Who knew? There are over 200 Broadway musicals that are about, or set in New York City — The Big Apple. Seems like there’s nothing Broadway likes as well as that “toddlin’ town” where it makes its home. From “42nd Street,” to “West Side Story”, Caledonia shares a selection of music from the shows that celebrate NYC.

WYB S04E07: Bloom Light Show Residency at SLEA

The latest edition (S04E07) of “Where Have You Been?” — the VCRadio original series that features places to go and things to do around the Second Life Grid — takes a look at a stunning multimedia art experience at the Second Life Endowment for the Arts.

“Semence: A Digital Odyssey” is a light and particle show created by Lalie Sorbet and Chrix. The name “Semence” means “seed” in French, and also refers to the reproductive cell of all living forms. This symbolizes the essence of the artists’ exploration of a digital world filled with pixels, colors, shapes, and effects. “Semence” represents a journey through the cycle of life, from inception to growth and beyond, and uses the full potential of Second Life, integrating particles, meshes, animesh, and other effects to create a memorable experience.

These light shows really are unlike anything you’ve seen on this grid. Not only can you observe the show, but sit in the chairs provided and you will soon find yourself immersed in the show- literally, flying amidst the emerging and changing shapes and colors. The artists say, “Semence” is more than just a show. It is a metaphor for life’s journey. We want you to be more than just a spectator. Visual effects will seamlessly incorporate you into the narrative, making you an integral part of this digital adventure. Join us to witness and participate in this fusion of technology and art, where every element is a seed sown to cultivate wonder, growth, and inspiration.

WYB S04E06: Genealogy in SL

The latest edition (S04E06) of “Where Have You Been?” — the VCRadio original series that features places to go and things to do around the Second Life Grid — discusses the Second Life Virtual Genealogy Society (SLVGS). There is a thriving community in Second Life centered around the study of family history and origins, and the tracing of family lineages.

The Second Life Virtual Genealogical Society brings together a wide variety of people who are interested in family histories, holds monthly meetings and offers a range of support for those tracing their ancestors.

Find then on the region Adam ondi Ahman – General

This Month:  Reflections of America

U.S. Politics are delicate matters to discuss, especially in a year like 2024. Looking back, Caledonia examines four award-winning musicals and how they reflect the issues and self-identity of American culture contemporary to when they debuted. What does America think of itself and how does that change from the 1930s through today? Featuring the award-winning productions Of Thee I Sing, Fiorello!, 1776, and Hamilton.

Where Have You Been? — Live at SL21B

On Wednesday 26th June, we broadcast the first of two special live editions of our original series, “Where Have You Been?”, which features things to do and places to visit around the Second Life Grid.

This show will be repeated on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12 noon and 4pm SLT/Pacific Time until our second and final live show from SL21B on Wednesday 10th July.

One of our favourite things about the Community Showcase is how clearly it displays the wide variety of communities that thrive in Second Life. On sixteen general showcase regions you can find seemingly endless types of communities and resident activities from art, to education, role-play, and all sorts of communities that form around shared interests. With this year’s celebration theme of “The Elements” the community showcase is a great place to see so much of what Second Life is really all about.

So, what’s the best way to see it all?  Well, to begin with you probably won’t be able to see it all. Though with SLB staying open for a month this year, chances are you can see much more of it, and attend many more events than in past years. But there is really no perfect way to explore the Showcase except to just get out there and do it.

SL21B Community Showcase – Full Exhibit List second.life/sl21bexhibits

In this episode we feature some exhibits in the southern portion of the showcase continent that feature blends of art and science. We’ll be doing a second live show on July 10th, at the VCRadio showcase exhibit where we’ll be featuring a whole different set of showcase destinations, from different areas of the continent.
