Where Have You Been? S06E01 – Mulafell
Welcome to Where Have You Been Season Six! This episode will be broadcast at 12 noon and 4pm SLT/Pacific Time on Wednesdays and Saturdays from June 10th.
We won’t spend a lot of precious time marveling at the wonder of the sixth year of us doing this together, for our Virtual Community Radio listeners. Even after all this time, there’s still so much to explore on the Second Life Grid. That’s the best part of it. So let’s dig in!
We’re beginning this new season with a destination that combines a lot of different appealing elements: exploration, cosy niches to linger in, and subtle nods to various elements of fantasy and fiction. We are visiting Mulafell, the capital of the four-region Mulashire. The McGregor-Midnight Family generously make their lands available to residents, including the regions Mulaness, Mulahope, and Mularune.
There are many lovely celebrations of Middle Earth in Second Life. Lovers of the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien can certainly find plenty of places to appeal to their inner Elf or Hobbit. But Mulafell has a great deal more than just that, including a train and boat rides. The creators have done a terrific job of creating visual carrots to follow, always leading you to more. It is a delightful destination to explore either on your own or with a friend.

Where Have You Been? S05E09 – FlygearZ: A Winter Waltz
Whether destinations specifically reflect any of the December holidays, or just the breathtaking glories of the snowy season, there’s no doubt there are many, many beautiful regions to be discovered and explored at this time of year — it made it really difficult to pick one to feature.
So, as we often suggest, when looking for places to explore across the Second Life grid, first listen to us…. (laughs) Then, check out the Second Life Destination Guide.
FlyGearZ produces, among other things, curated dance events. They are more than your average dance party — what Jenna Dirval puts together is something more. She applies her First World knowledge of dance and her love of exploring musical genres to construct shows that are memorable events. FlyGearZ have been wildly popular at Calas Galadhon, among other places.
Where Have You Been? S05E08 – A Museum to Get Lost In: The Vordun
Even nine years ago when it opened, the Vordun Museum & Gallery was impressive — lots of European artworks celebrated in the style of the great museums of the world, and it even then had a touch of the innovative using some then-just-emergent media and experience tools to enhance resident’s visits. Back then it was on a sub-parcel of the Fancy Decor store region, of which Jake Vordun is also the creator.
It’s certainly grown since then. The Vordun Museum & Gallery now fills its own region. And truly, it fills it. Not only are there works by Reynolds, Rubens, Gainsborough and a host of luminaries from throughout art history, but there are galleries featuring specific exhibitions — ten in all! The passion of its creator for art, for modern museum curation, and for the experience of visiting a world class museum is clear. It begins even before you enter, with the siting of the Museum on a rise with its staircase concourse, its water features and sculptures.
The Vordun offers some unique experiences to complement the works and themes featured. The exhibit “Musica Antiqua”, for example, focuses on early music in art and instruments. Both audio and video support are provided to enhance the experience. In the gallery featuring “Allegories of Artemisia” a series of vibrantly colored rooms take the visitor on a journey through the work of Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, drawing parallels between the subjects of the artist’s work and major events in their life. “Proverbs of the Low Countries” explores Peter Bruegel the Elder’s 1559 oil “The Blue Cloak” or “Netherlandish Proverbs.” The painting features 110 proverbial phrases, some of which might be familiar to you, such as “armed to the teeth” or “belling the cat.” When you accept the museum experience, a HUD will appear on your viewer screen and allow you to navigate close-up through each of the proverbs depicted in the work.
Visiting The Vordun really feels like you are visiting one of the great houses of Western art in London, Paris, Rome, Vienna or New York.

Where Have You Been? S05E07: The Big Halloween Episode
It’s October, and it’s the high spookable season. We are elated and exhausted already, and there’s still a lot of month to go for Hallowe’en in Second Life.
October is a big month in Second Life. So much so that a lot of this year’s seasonal offerings opened in September. And there’s no doubt that it’s not just you, or your nearest friends who “go big” for the Season. The All Hallows Holiday has many, many avid fans and practitioners in Second Life. If you are looking for spooky haunts, sinister asylums, or ghostly forests, you shall certainly find them!
In this episode we discuss some of the locations we enjoyed most, and where to find more. We don’t just choose any cob-web strewn location — we tend to look for places that are unique, or that reflect community. And we’ve lined up all the haunted houses, creepy carnivals, butchered and bloodletting asylums, mysterious forests warning you to enter only if you dare and strongly suggesting that you turn back NOW – to please almost any resident. They run the gamut from the Second Life equivalent of a Mom & Pop roadside attraction, where residents put out their favorite holiday décor and proudly declare “BOO to You!” to more extensive and sophisticated locales.

Where Have You Been: S05E06 — Bryggen
In this episode, we are heading somewhere that is both old and new within a long standing destination estate on the Blake Sea in Second Life — Second Norway, and particular the region Bryggen. As with many places in the Blake Sea, there is a real world Bryggen. It is a historic harbour district in Bergen, one of North Europe’s oldest port cities on the west coast of Norway.
The Second Life Bryggen has lots of appeal for your grid-exploring pleasure. In their own words, it is “an open, layered, and autonomous city. It thrives on diversity and initiative, every role contributes to the city’s rich identity.”
Bryggen also provides Roleplay opportunities, but as an integrated element of Second Norway, it is accessible via the estate railroad, and by water, opening it up to a lot of possibilities, not just RP. Bryggen could also have opportunities for photographers and image makers. Also, it might be a destination for you sailors to swing by as you explore that part of the Blake Sea.

Where Have You Been: S05E05 — The Outer Garden
Thanks to a listener tip, we’re discovering The Outer Garden: the beautiful creation of Bisou Dexler on the region Baddest. The Outer Garden has depth, balance, and calm in so many ways. It’s a perfect destination for photographers, explorers, and those who maybe are just looking for a quieting moment, surrounded by simple splendor.
The Outer Garden’s design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese paintings, aiming to represent two-dimensional elements in a three-dimensional space. It’s a good fit for a virtual world. Bisou also envisions the garden on Baddest as a space that evolves and gets re-envisioned over time.
The motif of this current garden, which features a restrained colour palette, is the Noh play “Hagoromo.” Noh is the oldest form of traditional Japanese theater. It involves both drama and dance and is often based on tales from traditional literature featuring a supernatural being transformed into a human hero who narrates the story. Noh integrates masks, costumes and various props in a dance-based performance, requiring highly trained actors and musicians.
On the artist’s blog, they state “May this new garden become a testament to beauty, enriching your soul with its presence. Looking forward to the enchanting presence of celestial beings in this garden where the worlds of the sea and sky intertwine without doubt.”

Where Have You Been? — S05E04: Sugarfish Artist’s Village
The latest episode of “Where Have You Been?”, our regular feature on things to do and places to visit across the Second Life grid, features Sugarfish Artist’s Village, which offers individual spaces for Second Life artists to display their work, as well as a flexible central exhibition space. In addition to the opportunities for art, the area includes games; a beach and all that comes with fishing, rock climbing, and a cafe. There’s a generous party deck and several locations suitable for dancing. Visitors are invited to pour a glass of wine and gather ‘round the fire on the dock with friends.
There is an art walk through the village, with four images on display per featured artist; and there are artists studios for rent in the form of shipping containers that have been raised off the sand and provided with their own decks.

Where Have You Been? S05E03 — Linden Lab Trust & Security Initiative
Something important was released from Linden Lab in the last weeks of May, and it is something that we at VCRadio feel strongly about, and these last weeks of June leading up to, and including, the opening of SL22B are a perfect time to highlight this. After all, it does not matter how interesting a destination is if you don’t exercise best practices in cyber safety, anywhere on the grid is potentially a threat.
We are referring to the SecondLife.com blog entry from May 23rd entitled “Your Account, Your World, Keep it Safe.” VCRadio was invited to a meeting with The Lab along with other vloggers, bloggers, and Sl Influencers where Linden Lab Executive Chairman Brad Oberwager explained the circumstances leading up to this new initiative and encouraged that the word be spread to the resident community — cyber security is important, critically so, and if residents engage in a few best practices, they can help contravene the efforts of people with ill intent, or as Oberwager called them “bad actors.”
We felt so strongly about it that we created a Public Service Announcement which now runs regularly on VCRadio. Second Life is a community: its strength and security is a responsibility that we all share. Linden Lab has recently expanded their Trust & Safety team, dedicated to protecting your accounts and investigating abuse more quickly and thoroughly than ever before. Yet it’s important for residents to do their part and use good judgement, and maybe even a bit of caution in order to keep themselves, their Linden Dollars, and their personal information secure.
This episode of WYB discusses online and in-world safety and security, including hints and tips to help you stay secure. We cover such topics as passwords, multi-factor authorization (MFA), keeping login details to yourself, and where it’s safe to buy or sell L$ — and more.
