This Month: Tony Retro Count­down Part 2 with Guest Mor­rie Enders 

Cale­do­nia wel­comes back guest Mor­rie Enders for anoth­er look at the con­tests for Best Musi­cal from the Tony Awards of years past; dis­cussing which shows have stood the test of time, and which make us tilt our heads and puzzle.

To be fea­tured: The Best Musi­cal for 1994 (Pas­sion vs Dis­ney’s Beau­ty & The Beast), and 2004 (Wicked vs Avenue Q)

The Mag­ic of The Musi­cal explores the blend­ing of music and dra­ma — fea­tur­ing the songs, his­to­ry, and lore that make up the musi­cal the­ater canon. Learn more about some of your favorite shows and com­posers as we cue the orches­tra, and the over­ture begins.

This mon­th’s guest:

Mor­rie Enders is the Exec­u­tive Direc­tor of Lin­coln Com­mu­ni­ty Play­house in Nebras­ka. For his efforts in lead­ing the Play­house, Mor­rie has been hon­ored with a Mayor’s Arts Award (2013) and Lin­coln Non­prof­it Exec­u­tive of the Year (2015). The Play­house has also received Mayor’s Arts Awards for Edu­ca­tion (2010), Out­stand­ing Arts Event (Pen­guin Project – 2014) and The Twink Lynch Orga­ni­za­tion­al Achieve­ment Award (2016).

A self-pro­claimed “The­atre Evan­ge­list,” Mor­rie has had pro­duc­tions per­formed at state, region­al and nation­al AACT­Fests (Amer­i­can Asso­ci­a­tion of Com­mu­ni­ty The­atre).  He has also had shows select­ed for fes­ti­vals in Mona­co, Ger­many and Japan. He has served as Artistic/Managing Direc­tor of La Crosse Com­mu­ni­ty The­atre where he host­ed a week­ly radio pro­gram of show tunes.

Mor­rie received the AACT Dis­tin­guished Mer­it Award and was award­ed the hon­or­able des­ig­na­tion of Fel­low of AACT (both 2007).

 

PASSION

Music and lyrics by Stephen Sond­heim and a book by James Lap­ine. The sto­ry was adapt­ed from Ettore Sco­la’s 1981 film Pas­sione d’Amore, and its source mate­r­i­al, Iginio Ugo Tar­che­t­ti’s 1869 nov­el Fos­ca.

Disney’s BEAUTY & THE BEAST

Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ash­man and Tim Rice, and book by Lin­da Woolver­ton. Adapt­ed from Walt Dis­ney Pic­tures’ Acad­e­my Award-win­ning 1991 ani­mat­ed musi­cal film of the same name – which in turn had been based on the clas­sic French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Lep­rince de Beaumont.

WICKED

Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Win­nie Holz­man. It is based on the 1995 Gre­go­ry Maguire nov­el Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, in turn based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 nov­el The Won­der­ful Wiz­ard of Oz and its 1939 Metro-Gold­wyn-May­er film adaptation.

AVENUE Q

A musi­cal com­e­dy fea­tur­ing pup­pets and human actors with music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty.
