Join us on Friday at a little after 12 noon or 4pm Pacific time, 8pm or midnight in the UK , for another episode in the landmark radio drama series The Black Mass, created by the late Erik Bauersfeld and his colleagues at the Pacifica radio station KPFA in Berkeley, California, over fifty years ago. In 30 chilling tales of mystery, imagination and the human mind, The Black Mass brings you some of literature’s most haunting stories, by masters of the craft — many of whom are best-known in other fields. Big Band, Trad Jazz and Swing

Today we’re taking a trip back to the heyday of the big bands in the first half of the 20th century, featuring a wide range of Big Band jazz and swing.

The programme includes a mixture of original period recordings* and more recent material.

You can also hear episodes of Engines of Our Ingenuity from the University of Houston every four hours from 12:00 UTC

And tune in today at 12 noon or 4pm Pacific (8pm or midnight UK time) for the latest episode of Where’ve You Been?, where we look at places and events across the Second Life grid (see separate entry).

The Light Programme

Saturday the 10th of July and today we make another foray into the world of Light Music, one of our staple genres here on VCRadio.

We can think of Light Music as filling a gap between out-and-out classical music, and the exceptional quality music production library and film music of the 1940s-50s — the latter also featuring from time to time on The Light Programme. It’s a continuum with perhaps Sullivan at one end, and maybe Coates at the other – though it’s difficult to define boundaries. In between are composers like Addinsell, Alwyn, Ketelbey, Tomlinson, Binge, Lane and others, and it’s their music that we’ll be featuring today. What these pieces and composers have in common, is a “classical” approach to melodic music. Their work is full of great tunes, and it utilises orchestral forces with as much aplomb as any classical composer. But in general (though not always), the music is a little lighter in tone and feel.

Then don’t miss another chance to hear Episode 11 of our Second Life travel show, “Where’ve You Been?”, where Caledonia Skytower and Elrik Merlin discuss places and events of interest across the Second Life Grid. This time we visit the incredible cyber-deco mall of Arcadian Rapture Remastered. The show airs at noon and 4pm Pacific /8pm and midnight in the UK. You can find more details here. And don’t miss Engines of Our Ingenuity from the University of Houston that tells the story of how our culture is formed by human creativity. Written and hosted by John Lienhard and other contributors, it is produced by Houston Public Media. Catch it just after the hour every four hours from 4am Pacific / 12:00 UTC.

The Black Mass 21: A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf

Join us on Friday at a little after 12 noon or 4pm Pacific time, 8pm or midnight in the UK , for another episode in the landmark radio drama series The Black Mass, created by the late Erik Bauersfeld and his colleagues at the Pacifica radio station KPFA in Berkeley, California, over fifty years ago. Tarot @ Teatime 10 — The Major Arcana

Thursday 8 July sees the first broadcast of Episode 10 of our popular series, “Tarot @ Teatime”, with Honey Heart and Willow Moonfire, exploring the history of the cards and how they may be read. Tune in to http://main.vcradio.org at noon or 4pm Pacific / 8pm or midnight UK time. This episode will repeat on Sunday.

Episode Ten
This covers the Major Arcana and various way of thinking about these twenty-two cards as a group. We discuss the notion of The Fool’s Journey, Jungian Archetypes, and the Major Arcana as a depiction of the interplay between order and chaos.

Where’ve You Been 11: Arcadian Rapture Remastered

Wednesday, July 7th sees the premiere of a brand new episode in our series “Where’ve You Been?”, where we look at things to do and places to see in and around the Second Life Grid.

In Episode 11, Where Have You Been? highlights a recently-remodelled destination that mixes shopping with entertainment in a colourful, creatively built environment that includes art, movies, an elegant atrium, and no less than three club/entertainment venues stacked one on top of the other.

Music of the Baroque

Today, Wednesday July 7th, we explore, once again, the music of the Baroque era. We’ll be including the work of a wide range of composers. Many will be familiar; other perhaps less so; or they may have written pieces that we know well but have no idea of who composed them — for example English composer Thomas Arne, who wrote Rule Britannia but also a range of other pieces which deserve more interest than is usually paid to them.

Then at 12 noon and 4pm Pacific / 8pm or midnight UK time, tune in to hear the NEW edition of “Where’ve You Been?”, our twice-monthly show on places to visit and things to do around the Second Life Grid. In this episode we visit  Arcadian Rapture Remastered — an extraordinary cyber-deco shopping mall (see separate entry)! And every four hours from 4am Pacific, tune in for “The Engines of Our Ingenuity”, from the University of Houston, about the machines that make our civilization run and the people whose ingenuity created them.

Music for Shakespeare

Today we are presenting a programme of music written to accompany, or inspired by, the plays of William Shakespeare. In addition we hope to give you a feeling for the world of the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre, with the help of recreations of the atmosphere of plays and playgoing at the time.

The programme includes music from the Elizabethan period to the present, with a wealth of classical material as well as Early Music (some of it performed by the players and musicians of the reconstructed Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in Bankside, London) and some modern examples such as the Third Ear Band’s music for Polanski’s film of Macbeth.
